Nookietown: A Novel
Nookietown is based in Nohquee, NJ. so nicknamed long before the antics that take place in this clever, funny, sexy novel.

If you’ve been married for more than a decade, and if you have children, especially if you are a woman, you might likely be intrigued by the premise of this book. Lucy, a divorcee, and Nancy, who has been married to Ted for umpteen years, are friends. They get together for drinks with some other friends, and, as happens, they begin to complain about their lives. It turns out that Lucy and Nancy have opposite problems. Lucy can’t find a nice, disease-free, age-appropriate man to have sex with to satisfy her physical needs. Nancy is exhausted by the demands of her life, and can’t keep up with her husband’s demands. And so an idea is born.

The idea, originally between the friends and Ted, all consenting adults, morphs into The Program in which the community’s needs are more broadly met.

It all clicks along wonderfully for a while. Until it doesn’t.

This is a very sexy novel, graphic at points, and also very funny. Often at the same time. There are a lot of characters, and each of them is individually and three-dimensionally drawn, which is quite an impressive feat for a novelist. What is really great about this book, though, is that beneath the veneer of sex and scandal is some real food for thought. It breaks down gender stereotypes, and forces us to ask ourselves why we go along with convention. Simply for convention’s sake, or because it really is right and helpful? What does “between consenting adults” actually mean? What happens when that goes beyond theory and into our real lives and onto the little league ball field?
