Drop Dead Healthy: One Man’s Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection
“Drop Dead Healthy: One Man’s Humble Quest for Bodly Perfection” by A.J. Jacobs chronicles the authors attempts to research and implement the best health advice out there. He starts out, in terms of health, your basic desk jockey. Aware of cholesterol and fiber and protein, vitamins and minerals, but with precious little on-purpose exercise and no conscious choices regarding health.
What he finds, as you may guess, is that much of it is contradictory. It is impossible to follow all the advice, since there is no agreement. He tries it all. Calorie Restriction. Vegetarianism. Paleo diets. Red wine and chocolate. Pollutant free living. Caveman exercising. Triathlons. Treadmill desks. You name it.
While he emerges stronger and quantifiably healthier, he also has no real answers in the end. Just a lot of interesting information and experiments. And a lot of guilt to be had – he manages to feel guilty about extra mango slices while I stuff a Twinkie into my mouth. Along the way we meet his family, including his quirky aunt and his larger than life elderly grandfather. The information is woven around personal stories, making it fun and entertaining.
