Dog on It: A Chet and Bernie Mystery (The Chet and Bernie Mystery Series) by Spencer Quinn

Dog On It is the first in a series that is lengthier than I thought it was until I looked it up on Amazon for this review. It is, in some ways, your basic detective novel, where the wily PI solves the crime the police didn’t. What saves it from being like 99.99% of all the other books you find it on the shelves is the truly unique and wonderful voice.

The book is told from the perspective of Chet, the PI’s dog. Chet failed out of police dog school after an unfortunate incident with a cat. Quinn has seriously captured the voice of a dog. I don’t mean the words a dog would use, but the tone and the thought process. He must have spent hours, staring at his own dog, making notes about what his dog would say or think, were he capable of speech. It is brilliantly pulled off.

I’ve read the first three in the series. I look forward to more.
