Midlife Happy Hour: Our Reward for Surviving Careers, Kids, and Chaos (Midlife Cabernet Book 2)

Midlife Cabernet, by Elaine Ambrose, raises a glass to the advantages of late middle age. Young enough to still have fun, but old enough not to have too many responsibilities left, Elaine makes you wish you could move to Idaho just to be in her mid-life happy hour club.

This is an autobiographical book. Elaine takes you from her youth on a farm, to college, to her bold entry into the field of television journalism. She is old enough to be the first woman to do a lot of things, and I’m proud to be following her example. She raised her children, buried her parents and now, only now, does she have the time and perspective to enjoy everything.

I had the pleasure of meeting Elaine at the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop, which she talks about in the book. (She talks about the workshop, not me.) She’s just as warm and entertaining in real life as you’d expect from reading the book. I’m a proud owner of one of her finger puppets (read the book for the explanation) and it does work like she says it will.

Funny and wise, this is the perfect gift book for a friend about to turn 60, or for yourself if you just want to enjoy Elaine’s joie de vivre.
