Lori Duff Writes
After twenty years practicing law, I decided to start doing what I always wanted to do, and what I always secretly did, which is write. I started with a blog on the Patch, and achieved “Star Patcher” status. That led to a humor blog and a legal column on Your Local News. Then my own website, a membership with the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, a spot in the Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop, and a blog on the Huffington Post, among other things. Oh yeah, I also wrote two books, “Mismatched Shoes and Upside Down Pizza,” and “The Armadillo, the Pickaxe, and the Laundry Basket” which were Amazon Bestsellers.
Check this out, for example:
After a while, it got to be that all I wanted to do was write. And so I did. And so I am. I don’t go anywhere without my trusty laptop in case I should have five spare minutes. I’m at the point now where I can say I’m a writer who practices law on the side, which is a much healthier way to be, at least for me. There’s a reason why you can retire from the military after twenty years – wage war for longer than that, and something can snap in your brain if you’re not careful. Ghost writing and copy writing are a natural extension of the skills I learned being a lawyer. I know how to research, how to knuckle down and get things done, I know how commas can change the meaning of a sentence, and I understand the value of a real deadline. Plus, I type about a hundred words per minute, which makes me pretty darned efficient, if I do say so myself.
It is truly surprising to me that everyone doesn’t love to write as much as I do. In fact, I’ve learned that most people can’t stand the writing process. This works for me: your chore is my delight. By hiring me as a ghost writer, I can make your ideas sing without you having to do so much as clear your throat. When I’m not writing, you can usually find me chaperoning something band related. (My son plays the oboe and my daughter the flute.) Sometimes, I even have time to talk to my husband. If you want to know more about them, read my books and my blog. I write about them more than they like. But hey – isn’t that the job of a mother of teenagers? To embarrass her children at every available opportunity? To cut to the chase, my Instagram screen name is EmbarrassingDuffMom. Because, who am I kidding?
